Persian Cat Trivia
The Silver Persian was
considered, from the outset of the Cat Fancy in both
Britain and America, just as it is today, on of the
most beautiful colors of all. By 1909, the Silver
Persian was recognized as occurring in three
distinct colors: The Chinchilla Silver Persian, The
Shaded Silver Persian and the Masked Silver Persian.
The Chinchilla- Silver was expected to be as pale a
silver as possible, with little or no tabby markings
or dark shading. The Chinchilla-Silver was required
to be totally free of any brown or cream tinges. The
first Shaded Persians were almost certainly in Great
Britain in the early 1880’s. The best-known of these
silver varieties and the most lightly-shaded came to
be known as the Chinchilla. The out crossing of the
Chinchilla silver in 1909 is what we see today as
the Shaded Silver particularly in the United States.
The 1909 version of the Shaded Silver Persian was
considered an indispensable color and was much
admired for its type, size, wealth of coat and
coloring. In 1909 the masked Silver Persian was
still considered to be a new variety and few were
being bred. Most of the masked silvers that had been
shown were considered to be a spoiled smoke Persian.
The ideal masked silver Persian should resemble the
Siamese cat. The body should be as pale a silver as
possible.
